General

What is SSL? What is TLS?

SSL (Secure Sockets Layer) and it’s successor TLS (Transport Layer Security) are methods used to secure and encrypt sensitive information like credit cards, usernames, passwords, and other private data sent over the Internet.

Website pages secured with SSL and TLS are those branded with the HTTPS in their URL address.

Who needs an SSL Certificate?

Anything (including people, software, computers, and devices) who exchange sensitive information on any network, including the Internet and Web, needs to use SSL/TLS. Sensitive information includes things like username and passwords, credit card numbers, or any other data that needs to be kept private.

What is a Wildcard SSL/TLS certificate?

Wildcard SSL/TLS allows the use of an unlimited number of subdomains in the SSL/TLS certificate. Any full domain that matches *.yourdomain.com (where * can be any word and yourdomain.com is your domain) will be secured by a wildcard SSL digital certificate. For instance, egypttrust.com, www.egypttrust.com, mail.egypttrust.com, and any other combination of egypttrust.com would be secured by a wildcard certificate issued to *.egypttrust.com.

How does the warranty work?

The warranty protects the end user if an egypttrust.com Certificate is mis-issued (i.e. issued to a third party that was not entitled to the SSL Certificate).

Technical

What is the difference between HTTP and HTTPS?

The S in “HTTPS” stands for “secure.” HTTPS is just HTTP with SSL/TLS.

A website with an HTTPS address has a legitimate SSL certificate issued by a certificate authority, and traffic to and from that website is authenticated and encrypted with the SSL/TLS protocol.

To encourage the Internet as a whole to move to the more secure HTTPS, many web browsers have started to mark HTTP websites as “not secure” or “unsafe.” Thus, not only is HTTPS essential for keeping users safe and user data secure, it has also become essential for building trust with users.

How does a website get an SSL certificate?

Website owners need to obtain an SSL certificate from a certificate authority, and then install it on their web server (often a web host can handle this process).

A certificate authority is an outside party who can confirm that the website owner is who they say they are.

They keep a copy of the certificates they issue.

How does SSL Certificates work?

A browser or server attempts to connect to a website (i.e. a web server) secured with SSL. The browser/server requests that the web server identify itself.

The web server sends the browser/server a copy of its SSL certificate.

The browser/server checks to see whether or not it trusts the SSL certificate. If so, it sends a message to the web server.

The web server sends back a digitally signed acknowledgement to start an SSL encrypted session.

Encrypted data is shared between the browser/server and the web server.
